Taking a Taxi in Korea – Essential Korean Phrases

Taxis in Korea are convenient and relatively affordable. If you know some basic Korean phrases, it will be easier to get to your destination smoothly. Let’s learn the most useful expressions you can use when taking a taxi in Korea.

1. Getting a Taxi

  • 택시! (taek-si) – Taxi! (to call a taxi)
  • 빈차예요? (bin-cha-ye-yo?) – Is this taxi available?

2. Telling the Destination

Korean Pronunciation Meaning
서울역 가 주세요. seo-ul-yeok ga ju-se-yo Please go to Seoul Station.
이 주소로 가 주세요. i ju-so-ro ga ju-se-yo Please go to this address. (show the driver your phone)
공항까지 얼마나 걸려요? gong-hang-kka-ji eol-ma-na geol-lyeo-yo? How long does it take to the airport?

3. During the Ride

  • 여기서 세워 주세요. (yeo-gi-seo se-wo ju-se-yo) – Please stop here.
  • 좀 더 빨리 가 주세요. (jom deo ppal-li ga ju-se-yo) – Please go faster.
  • 천천히 가 주세요. (cheon-cheon-hi ga ju-se-yo) – Please go slower.

4. Paying for the Taxi

  • 카드로 결제할게요. (ka-deu-ro gyeol-je hal-ge-yo) – I’ll pay by card.
  • 현금으로 할게요. (hyeon-geum-eu-ro hal-ge-yo) – I’ll pay in cash.
  • 영수증 주세요. (yeong-su-jeung ju-se-yo) – Please give me a receipt.

5. Cultural Tip

Most taxis in Korea accept both credit cards and transportation cards (like T-money). Tipping is not required in Korea.
